The argument paper served as one of the summative assessment devices of the unit. It challenged students to not only assert their opinion on a hot-button issue, but to incorporate research citations and model the argument after the traditional argument structure (intro, support, counterargument, conclusion). The paper was worth 100 points and 4 paragraphs long. It was constructed entirely in class, with the exception of a few that had to be finalized at home.

Our essay workshop blocks served as a wonderful example of differentiation because although every student was at a different place in their progress, every single student was engaged in meaningful learning appropriate for their pace. Some used all of the allotted time to write it out, others were matched by me with someone to peer edit with, some were given the opportunity (or took their own initiative) to assist others in the research or writing process, and still others were urged to catch up on journals upon finishing the essay if they were behind. The above sample paper about school uniforms exhibits the fine work that many of the students produced.
