This lesson served as the kickoff for our Modernized Fairy Tale Movie Trailer project. In order to prepare the students to begin working on the trailers, I provided opportunities to practice evaluating the ways that details and themes of traditional fairy tales have been modernized, or made current, in actual movie trailers. I showed the trailers on YouTube and the students were given time to analyze each one using a graphic organizer and group discussion. This not only prepared them to begin brainstorming for their own trailers at the bottom of the chart, but it tied in the essential question of the Fairy Tale Unit ("What makes fairy tales timeless?") by encouraging them to ponder the timelessness of the stories.
